14th November - Mercado de Hecheceria / by David Harrison

Just try a little WigWam Bam!

After yesterday's traffic hell in downtown La Paz, we spent a peaceful night at Colibri Camping & Eco Lodge in our very own WigWam.  Amanda said it was too Eco for Roof-Tenting!

Lovely place - about 8 miles south of the city in the Rio La Paz valley.

I could have stayed there all day, relaxing in a hammock drinking Coca Tea - but Amanda was keen to visit the Witches Market for Talismans and Potions.  So we hopped on the 273 Mini-Bus and just one hour later hopped off at the Mercado de Hecheceria!!  Still - mustn't grumble - the bus fare was just 30 pence each.

Plenty of Talismans (bought a couple) and lots of Potions (bit too smelly and smoky) but way too many baby Llama foetuses. From tiny embryos to new born. Hundreds - hanging from the market stalls - yuk!  Apparently you can bring good luck to your new-build house by burying a foetus in the foundations, or you can ward off evil spirits from your family by burning a foetus on a bonfire in the garden whilst the whole family stands round the flames!!

We met a few Witches at the market - their hats are round rather than pointy - photo evidence below!

After a hearty pub lunch, we took the Austrian built Cable Car (think St Anton) high over La Paz and marvelled at just how many stray dogs live in such a confined urban space.

(Editor's note: all the dogs we saw and met were healthy and happy - some even had collars!)
