246km drive northwest along the Alaskan Highway we found ourselves a fantástica Cabaña con Buena Vista at Cottonwood Park on the shore of Kluane Lake (at 50 miles long, more like a sea!).
Cottonwood Park is close to the hamlet of Destruction Bay (population 55), which was established in 1942 as a relay station for truckers during construction of the Alaska Highway. It earned its name when a 1943 storm destroyed all the buildings in town.
Our Log Cabin certainly lived up to its ‘Buena Vista’ title. Stunning scenery comin atcha from every angle – lake shore and snow-capped peaks from the verandah!
Unusual setup mind. Cabin furnished like a posh bedroom and lounge – Kingsize Bed, Swish Curtains, Comfy Chairs & a Gas Fireplace – but no electricity – no lights/ no plug sockets/ no kitchen/ in fact no tap – although there was a loo and sink in a separate smaller cabin, with water in 10 litre plastic containers for flushing and washing!
Not that we needed electric lights – sun didn’t set until 01:00am and rose again at 04:00am – a sure sign that we’re getting closer to the Arctic Circle.
Had a fire on the lake shore on our second night. Trad Harrison family beach burnup – collected driftwood along the beach – sawed into firepit size logs by Lumberjack Dave and flames stoked until late. Less trad that the sun still shone at midnight!
Hey checkout the Moose Antlers that midnight sun gave the fireside couple’s shadows! And the surprised look in their eyes when No Flash Required for a late night selfie!!
Check out David’s culinary skills too – fine dining al fresco – Stag Chili Private Reserve, served on a bed of Uncle Ben’s Spanish Style Ready Rice, accompanied by a 3 litre Bota Box of Californian Merlot! Mmm mmh!!
