Memorial Day itself sees us at Motel 6 in Astoria, where the Maritime Memorial Gardens is just outside our window. Decked out with hundreds of Stars & Stripes Flags the place is sadly silent and deserted.
We visit to pay our respects and stroll on along the banks of the Colombia River, under the mighty 4.1 mile Astoria-Megler Bridge which joins Oregon and Washington State, until we find the Buoy Brewery - loud and lively - seems the entire population of Astoria is here enjoying their Memorial Day off!
Later we head for Olympia - across the mighty bridge and 121 miles into Washington State. Check in at the Red Lion Hotel expecting a traditional boozer - finding a comfortable hotel with an expensive restaurant. Instead, David cycles to Jack in the Box - for a Mexican themed Burger - so tasty he immediately orders a second!
