Mahahual (Population 920) is a laid back Caribbean beach town proud of its sustainable approach to tourism, so imagine the locals surprise when a Cruise Ship Dock was built here ten years ago!
We stayed well out of town at the Almaplena Eco Resort, on the beachfront 10 Km south of the gringo-friendly bars and shops!
Beachfront it most certainly is - on a stretch of coast where the turquoise waters of the Mexican Caribbean Sea meet beaches of fine white sand! Just off the beach is the Costa Maya Meso-American Barrier Reef, the second largest coral reef system in the world!
Strong winds were blowing - good for the windmill generated electricity supply - but not for mask and snorkel subaquatic adventures.
Loved it! Could have stayed a month!! Could have stayed forever!!!
