4th December - Piura / by David Harrison

Beachside break over - onwards and upwards through the arid desert of northern Peru.  Hoped to make it to Mancora today, but Sat Nav tells us it's over 600km and more than 8 hours driving, so we head for Piura and the Colonial elegance of the Los Portales Hotel.

Just in time for a 50 float Carnival of local Policia Divisions each boasting their contributions to the safety and security of Peru.  And each brandishing their guns!! The entire local population out on the streets cheering them on!

Ironic really as our experience of the Peruvian Policia today has been two blue light stops on the highway with attempts to extract 'fines' for driving without headlights on!

Our headlights were most certainly on - and we told the Policia most politely to eff off!!
