19th November - Cusco - Inca Empire Stronghold / by David Harrison

Historical Charms in a breathtaking setting!

So Amanda told me!!

I spent the day booking tickets for Machu Picchu whilst she enjoyed a leisurely stroll down the wide cobbled streets of the Colonial Old Town, through Plaza de Armas (where the glaring impact of global tourism has installed a McDonalds, KFC & Starbucks - the first of these we've seen since leaving London - no we didn't visit!), and on to Qorikancha Inca Ruins, Catedral Basilica de la Virgen de la Asuncion, Artesan Mercados and Iglesia San Pedro - which we both saw at close quarters from the balcony of our room at the Cusco Jungle Hotel!

Amanda's day was made when a lady in traditional costume approached her and pointing to a tiny bundle wrapped in a colourful shawl asked "would you like to hold my baby?" - "for money!"

For 2 Soles the lady even took Amanda & the baby's photo!
