21st October - Paso Los Libertadores or bust! / by David Harrison

Left Tupungato at 06:30 hours for the 250km drive to Paso Internacional Los Libertadores.  High in the Andes at an altitude of 3,200m this is the main border crossing between Chile and Argentina.  We'd heard stories of 5 hour queues for vehicles to cross the border - so we got up early!

Hairy drive there - David showed off his mountain pass rallying skills to the Argies - and we arrived at the 3km Tunel Cristo Redentor around 09:30 hours. A narrow tunnel - and very dark inside - mind those juggernauts - opened in 1980 it cut 600m off the altitude of the highest point of the road - and 65 hairpin bends!!

Immigration and Aduana were having an easy day - no queues - so we were Bienvenidos a la Republica de Chile by 10:15am and off down the 26 curvas to make our descent.

Celebrated our arrival back in Chile with a roadside cuppa - sorry - way too early for chilled SB! Set our coordinates for Los Molles on the Pacific Coast and found a comfy Cabana for the night - That's David on the balcony with a Pisco Sour!!
