30th September - Glaciar San Rafael / by David Harrison

We're in a small town in Patagonia called Puerto Chacabuco staying at the only place you can stay.  Lucky me, it a gorgeous hotel (not the roof tent).

After a cup of tea in the reception of the Hotel Loberias del Sur we spent the day at the Luguna San Rafael National Park and it was amazing.  We set sail at 8 in the morning and were served breakfast on board.  At 11 we had cocktails followed by a slap up lunch with wine.  On arrival at the Laguna we were asked to put on life jackets and clamber on to inflatable boats!  A bit rash we thought.

It was spectacularly beautiful, the huge icebergs really are that blue, they are stunning.  I couldn't stop photographing them.

Back on the catamaran we had hot chocolate and cakes.  Not long after that we toasted the day with Johnny Walker Whisky poured over millenary ice collected from the water that day.  We were told the ice could have been as old as 10,000 years!  Extraordinary.  It was delicious.  Then the open bar session commenced.  It came as a surprise to us that after a few drinks......the Karaoke began.  Luckily for us it was in Spanish so we were able to listen and laugh and were not asked to take part.  Phew!

At the hotel we collapsed in to bed.  It had been an amazing experience, an out of this world day.
