First stop on the Baja Peninsula is La Paz and unlike its Bolivian namesake traffic here is most laid back. Book in at the now ubiquitous City Express at Palmira Marina and once again find ourselves virtually the only guests in the Hotel. And the only customers at the Marina Restaurant for Dinner that night!
Bright and early Friday morning off along the scenic Ruta Una for a 223km drive to Cabo San Lucas anticipating an Ushuaia like Fin del Mundo vibe. Perhaps we should have read Lonely Planet's wise words before setting our coordinates for Los Cabos!
"Nowhere in Mexico is the desert disappearing faster than in the Los Cabos Corridor between San Jose del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas. In its place: cookie cutter resorts, US Chain Stores, aquifer-depleting golf courses and all-inclusive hotels."
David's quote better sums the place up: "Not one ounce of Mexico left in Cabo!"
El Cabo Vista Hotel very nice - our top floor room has Kitchenette and Balcony with Ocean Views (if you crane your neck and peer between the monster US owned Hotel Towers!)
Next day Amanda settles down at 'Slim's Elbow Room Bar' - the World's Smallest Bar - whilst ever entrepreneurial David puts his International Powerboat Driver's Licence (ICC) and stylish Sombrero to good use skippering US Tourists round the headland on a 'You Hook It - We Cook It' boat trip to El Arco in his newly acquired Panga.
Los Cabos - not quite the mystical, ethereal, majestic and untamed place we'd read about. More a 'low end' holiday verruca on the sole of the Baja Peninsula! Packed with Yanks talkin LOUD about Sport Fishin, Truck Drivin, Golf Playin, Bud Light Swillin - and pushin what little is left of the once traditional Mexican Fishing Village even further down the plughole!
Sunday morning we headed outta town as fast as our All Terrain BF Goodrich tyres would take us!!!
