With some trepidation we left Tegucigalpa early on Sunday morning and headed north to the Lago de Yojoa. News bulletins showed main roads blocked by burning barricades right across Honduras the previous day, and LQ Hotel staff warned us that although roads in the Capital were clear, roads further north could still be blocked!
Pablo's a tough guy, and with our All Terrain tyres plus four wheel drive we figured we would make it the 190km to D&D Brewery at Los Naranjos for afternoon Craft Beers and a room for the night!
Heavy Military presence all along the CA5 main road as we drove north. Troops in camo combats armed with US M16 Assault Rifles. Many abandoned barricades bulldozed into the gutter, scorch marks on the tarmac where burning tyres had been just a few hours earlier, and Police Road Checks every few kilometres. We were waved through all the Military and Police checkpoints without any problems, and made it safely to D&D Brewery by 11:00am. Just in time for a couple of 12oz glasses of their American Pale Ale - well deserved after our apprehensive drive!
At D&D's Paradise Plantation we checked into Finca Room 4 with private bath and relaxing front porch and chilled on the comfortable chairs taking in the wonderful wildlife - hundreds of butterflies, beautiful tropical flowers - each with their own species of hummingbird - iguanas climbing trees and a flock of chickens running around the jungle. Finca Rooms 1 to 3 were unoccupied - it really was a tranquil setting in which to unwind after two days of tension!!
